Minor Project 8 Option 1+2

The Election

Back-story:
Harry Frances was an unassuming accountant from New Jersey. He lived a safe, predictable and quiet life until one Tuesday morning that changed his life forever. As Harry waited for his usual breakfast, in his usual booth in his usual diner, he fiddled with his new cell phone. When Harry got to his office later that day he discovered that he accidently recorded a conversation between the two men who had sat in the next booth from him at the diner. Harry was shocked to hear that he had recorded the two men's plans to take over White House. Harry very frightened with this information and not sure what to do finally decided to take this information to the CIA.
It was learned Harry had stumbled on information from a very powerful terrorist group. This group was grooming a very charismatic and powerful senator named Jack Canfield to be the next President of the United States. Jack Canfield was very well liked and the media was already declaring him the winner of the upcoming election. Jack Canfield was however a puppet of the terrorist group and the recording revealed that with Jack Canfield as President the group would take the United States down.  The CIA knew this could not happen. They come up with a plan.
A month after passing this information onto the authorities Harry Frances got an unexpected visit from the Director of the CIA. Harry Frances was told it was his patriotic duty to be the opposing candidate in the next election. The media and the American public thought this to be ridiculous and so did Harry Frances. But he knew he had no choice but to run.

Gameplay Mechanics:
The game The Election is a game where you must guide Harry Frances through the White House collecting ways for Harry to win the election to score points (such as: lower taxes, better healthcare plan, etc.) while trying to get him to the center of the maze, which is the oval office. If you collect up to 100 points and reach the office within the time limit, you get to advance to the next level. However, if you collect something that can cause problems to his campaign (like losing a debate, scandal, misspeak to the press) then you will loose points. Also if Harry runs into Jack Canfield or one of the terrorists, then he will have to start back at the start of the level. There are doors that can lead to shortcuts through each maze. This is a gamble however, because these doors can also lead you into some terrorists or Jack which will both deduct points and lead Harry back to the beginning. Along the walls of the maze or "White House" will be portraits of past Presidents. Each portrait has an unusual and helpful tool. Once the player reaches a portrait he can keep the tool that can help him in his mission. For instance President Washington will have an axe that will help Harry Frances if and when he comes across an obstacle such as piece of furniture in his way. This can also create a shortcut to the Oval Office. Once at the Oval Office Harry Frances will be the President of the United States and will have saved the country.

Playing Cards

I chose the Jack of Spades from a traditional deck of cards for a few reasons. One is because of the design. The drawing of the 17th century aristocrat is colorful and has intricate details. Like the other face cards it has a Siamese twin style and is definitely more interesting than the numbered cards in the deck. I think there would be fun ways in which to update the Jack to a more modern and current style. I am also partial to the Jack because it shares my initial "J". Lastly I chose the Jack of Spades because it’s the "one eyed Jack"!

I have a box of baseball cards in my closet. I knew exactly which card I wanted my parents to send to me. It is Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte. He has been a great pitcher for the Yankees just about my whole life. I have seen him pitch at Yankee stadium a few times and was always a lot of fun. I like this card. I like his stance on the mound. I also like the photography style used. Andy is in focus and the crowd is out of focus. Andy Pettitte has recently come out of retirement, I am happy about that. I guess I need his new baseball card.

When I was little, Pokémon was everywhere. Back then it was sort of a rule that if you see a product with Pikachu’s face on it, you automatically had to buy it. That being said, my favorite Pokémon of all time was definitely Squirtle. Not only is he probably the most well known water-type Pokémon (which is my favorite element), but also he evolves into Wartotle who then evolves into Blastoise, a giant turtle with cannons popping out of his shell. How awesome is that! Squirtle was also one of the starter Pokémon in the original Game Boy games. This makes him very well known to the entire Pokémon fanbase.

Game Motivation

In my opinion, motivation and objectives are some of the most important parts in any game. The player needs an established goal to make them want to progress through the game, otherwise then why would someone want to play the game in the first place? Red Dead Redemption is a game that provides the player with motivation to see the character succeed.
Red Dead Redemption is a story that takes place in the old West. It is about a retired outlaw named John Marston who wishes to escape his bloodstained past. Early in the game we find out that he was taken from his wife and son by the government and is being forced to capture or kill his former partner and gang leader Bill Williamson in exchange for their return. As the player continues through the game's story, they may find themselves feeling more and more attached to John and championing for him to succeed in his mission. The interesting and likeable characters motivate the players to continue with the game. There is also a cast of other likable characters that give the player more objectives to help reach their goals. Sometimes you’ll help a traveling salesman sell his fake elixirs or help a crazy unhygienic prospector find some treasure he threw his life away finding, and everything in between. There are also many side objectives that make good diversions from the main campaign without the player being completely distracted. An example of this is would be stopping a cannibal from eating the citizens or helping a man get the deed to a plot of land.
Since its release, Red Dead Redemption has won many Game of the Year Awards. It has won these awards for its soundtrack and visuals. But it has also won these awards for the story.  It provides players with motivation and objectives to continue playing the game. It makes its player want and look forward to sequels. There are so many games on the market today and many of them fall short.  In my opinion Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games out there.
